Captions for Instagram Reels
Instagram draws its own interface over every Reel after you post it, so a caption that looks fine in an editor can end up under the username or the like button. Meta tells advertisers to keep roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side free of text. That is the most careful figure there is, and it is a good place to start.

What Reels puts over your video
- Your name, the post’s text and the audio line along the bottom
- Like, comment, share and more down the right edge
- On an ad, a call to action button as well, which is why Meta’s figure is so generous at the bottom
- Top 14%, bottom 35%, 6% each side Meta ads guide for Instagram Reels
- 9:16 vertical Meta ads guide for Instagram Reels
- Caption between 269 px and 1248 px from the top
Set it up in Captik
Set the frame to 9:16
Switch the shape above the preview. The preview’s shape is what exports.
Turn on Safe area
The guide button on the preview shades the bands the apps cover. It never appears in the export. Captik does not move your caption for you, so this is the step that matters.
Drag the caption up
New projects put the caption low in the frame, inside the band Meta asks you to avoid. Drag it to a little above the middle of the chest and it stays there for every line.
Working in another editor? The safe zone checker draws these bands on your own frame and gives you an overlay PNG. Captions in your language: see every language.
Instagram Reels captions, answered
Does the 35% apply to ordinary Reels or only ads?
Meta publishes it for ads, which carry a call to action button. An ordinary Reel has less at the bottom, but we could not find a separate published figure for it. Captik’s own editor guide uses 20% at the bottom for ordinary posts; staying above 35% is the choice that works for both.
Should I also use Instagram’s own captions sticker?
That is your call. A caption you burn in stays with the video wherever it is reposted, in the script and spelling you chose.
