How Bengali script looks on screen

Bengali script has a headline like Devanagari, but its letters are rounder and wider, and some vowel signs are drawn on both sides of a consonant. ো and ৌ wrap the letter they belong to, so a caption tool that treats each character as one unit gets the width of a word wrong. A Hindi font cannot draw any of it.

In the width table Captik fits every line with, measured in Chrome on the caption fonts, one Bengali letter takes 1.00 em against 0.59 em for a Latin one. The sample line on this page comes out 1.25 times as wide as the same line in Roman letters.

Fonts that really draw it

Noto Sans Bengali is the default. The Text tab also lists 10: Google Sans, Baloo Da 2, Galada, Atma, Alkatra, Hind Siliguri, Anek Bangla, Mina, Noto Serif Bengali, Tiro Bangla.

Three ways to write it

  • Native Script

    আজ আমরা একটা সহজ রেসিপি বানাব

Bengali script, as it is printed in books and newspapers. English words you say are written in Bengali script too.

  • Romanised (Latin)

Aaj amra ekta sohoj recipe banabo

Bengali in Roman letters, the way many people type it on their phones. English words stay in English.

  • English Translation

Today we’ll make an easy recipe

An English translation, timed sentence by sentence, for viewers who do not read Bengali.

Worth knowing for Bengali

  • Give conjunct heavy words their own line

Bengali joins consonants into tall compound letters, and words like সংক্ষিপ্ত run wide. Split a long line in the editor rather than letting the whole row shrink to fit.

  • Spell loanwords the way your viewers do

Native Script writes the English you say in Bengali letters, and there is often more than one accepted spelling (রেসিপি is common, others exist). Retype the ones your audience would spell differently; Captik keeps a single word fix for later videos.

  • Check the rounder letters at caption size

Bengali needs more width per letter than Hindi. A template that fits a whole sentence on one row has to shrink it further, so if the words look small, try one that shows a few words at a time, such as Captik Glow.

Templates that hold Bengali

We drew this page’s sample line through the real caption engine in each template and kept the ones where nothing was cut and the words stayed a readable size. Handwritten and serif templates are built around Latin letters, so they look most like themselves in Roman captions.

In Bengali script

  • Captik Glow

The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.

  • Aura

An editorial lockup: a large feature word, an italic serif and small words around it.

  • Highlighted Word

A plain white line with the spoken word picked out in a warm colour.

  • Captik Word

One clean row that builds as you speak, the current word brightest.

In Roman letters

  • Journal

Handwriting that arrives word by word, blurring into focus.

  • Aura

An editorial lockup: a large feature word, an italic serif and small words around it.

  • Blockbuster

A red condensed capitals run, then the rest of the line in a white script.

  • Captik Glow

The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.

How to caption a Bengali video

  1. Step 1

    Upload and choose Bengali

Any common video format and any size. Captik times each word to your voice, usually in under a minute.

  2. Step 2

    Choose how to write it

Native Script gives you Bengali script. Romanised (Latin) spells it in Roman letters, and English Translation translates each sentence.

  3. Step 3

    Fix, place and export

Correct any word, pick a template, turn on Safe area and drag the caption clear of what the app covers, then export. The render happens on our servers, so it works from a phone.

Cutting in Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve? The plugin lists Bengali and puts the captions on your timeline. Check where the caption sits with the safe zone checker.

Bengali captions, answered

Are English words written in Bengali script?

With Native Script selected, yes. Captik writes the English words you say in Bengali script so the caption uses one script. Choose Romanised (Latin) to keep English words in English letters.

Does Captik caption Assamese?

Not as a language of its own. Assamese uses a closely related script, but the spoken language list has Bengali and does not have Assamese, so Assamese speech is not transcribed as Assamese.

Can I export Bengali captions from my phone?

Yes. Bengali captions render on Captik’s servers, which load Noto Sans Bengali, so the file comes out the same from a phone or a computer.

Does Bengali work in the Premiere Pro, After Effects and Resolve plugin?

Yes. Bengali is on the plugin panel’s language list, with the same native, Roman and English options.
