How Tamil script looks on screen

Tamil script has no headline and a compact set of letters. A dot above a letter, the pulli, marks a consonant with no vowel after it, and vowel signs can sit before or after the consonant as full width glyphs. That is why Tamil runs far wider than the letter count suggests: a tool that treats its vowel signs as small marks underestimates a Tamil line and lets it clip.

In the width table Captik fits every line with, measured in Chrome on the caption fonts, one Tamil letter takes 1.30 em against 0.59 em for a Latin one. The sample line on this page comes out 1.50 times as wide as the same line in Roman letters.

Fonts that really draw it

Noto Sans Tamil is the default. The Text tab also lists 14: Google Sans, Baloo Thambi 2, Anek Tamil, Coiny, Oi, Arima, Catamaran, Mukta Malar, Hind Madurai, Meera Inimai, Pavanam, Noto Serif Tamil, Tiro Tamil, Kavivanar.

Three ways to write it

  • Native Script

    இந்த வழி நேரத்தை சேமிக்கும்

Tamil script. English words you say are written in Tamil script too, so the caption stays in one script.

  • Romanised (Latin)

    Indha vazhi nerathai semikkum

Tanglish: Tamil spelled in Roman letters, with the English words you say kept in English.

  • English Translation

    This way saves you time

An English translation of each sentence, timed to your speech, for viewers outside Tamil Nadu.

Worth knowing for Tamil

  • Pick a font that really has Tamil letters

Most display fonts stop at Latin. Choose one and your Tamil words stay in Noto Sans Tamil while only the English changes, which looks like the font picker is broken. The Text tab’s தமிழ் chip lists the ones that draw Tamil.

  • Keep lines to three or four words

Tamil’s width means a sentence that fits one row in Hindi can take two here. Short lines keep the size up and read faster at reel speed.

  • Tanglish for mixed audiences

Roman Tamil suits viewers who speak the language and read English better, and it lets the handwritten and serif templates show their real letterforms.

Templates that hold Tamil

We drew this page’s sample line through the real caption engine in each template and kept the ones where nothing was cut and the words stayed a readable size. Handwritten and serif templates are built around Latin letters, so they look most like themselves in Roman captions.

In Tamil script

  • Captik Glow

The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.

  • Aura

An editorial lockup: a large feature word, an italic serif and small words around it.

  • Illusion

A big word between two small lines, with a glitch as it lands.

  • Highlighted Word

A plain white line with the spoken word picked out in a warm colour.

In Roman letters

  • Journal

Handwriting that arrives word by word, blurring into focus.

  • Blockbuster

A red condensed capitals run, then the rest of the line in a white script.

  • Interlock

The emphasised word becomes a large italic serif, with the line fitted around it.

  • Tabahi

Heavy capitals with a thick outline, for loud punchy lines.

How to caption a Tamil video

  1. Step 1

    Upload and choose Tamil

Any common video format and any size. Captik times each word to your voice, usually in under a minute.

  2. Step 2

    Choose how to write it

Native Script gives you Tamil script. Romanised (Latin) spells it in Roman letters, and English Translation translates each sentence.

  3. Step 3

    Fix, place and export

Correct any word, pick a template, turn on Safe area and drag the caption clear of what the app covers, then export. The render happens on our servers, so it works from a phone.

Tamil captions, answered

Can I write Tamil captions in English letters (Tanglish)?

Yes. Choose Tamil as the spoken language and Romanised (Latin) as the writing system. Tamil words are spelled in Roman letters and the English words you say stay in English.

Why doesn’t the font I picked change my Tamil words?

Because that font has no Tamil letters, so the words stay in Noto Sans Tamil. Open the Text tab and pick from the தமிழ் chip, or upload your own Tamil font.

Are English words written in Tamil script?

With Native Script selected, yes, so the caption reads in one script. Choose Romanised (Latin) to keep English words as English.

Does Tamil work in the Premiere Pro, After Effects and Resolve plugin?

Yes. Tamil is on the plugin panel’s language list, with native, Roman and English options.
