How Malayalam script looks on screen

Malayalam script is made of rounded, looping letters with no headline. Its vowel signs are full glyphs rather than small marks, and words join several consonants into one cluster. Of the nine Indian scripts Captik draws, it is the widest we measured, which is why a template that holds a Hindi line can run out of room on the same sentence in Malayalam.

In the width table Captik fits every line with, measured in Chrome on the caption fonts, one Malayalam letter takes 1.31 em against 0.59 em for a Latin one. The sample line on this page comes out 1.41 times as wide as the same line in Roman letters.

Fonts that really draw it

Noto Sans Malayalam is the default. The Text tab also lists 8: Google Sans, Arima, Baloo Chettan 2, Anek Malayalam, Manjari, Gayathri, Noto Serif Malayalam, Chilanka.

Three ways to write it

  • Native Script

    ഇന്ന് നമുക്ക് ഒരു പുതിയ സ്ഥലം കാണാം

Malayalam script. English words you say are written in Malayalam script too, so the caption reads in one script.

  • Romanised (Latin)

Innu namukku oru puthiya sthalam kaanaam

Malayalam in Roman letters, often called Manglish, with English words left in English.

  • English Translation

Today let’s see a new place

An English translation of each sentence, timed to your speech, for viewers who do not read Malayalam.

Worth knowing for Malayalam

  • Pick a template that shows a few words at a time

Malayalam’s width leaves less room than any other script here. A template that fits a whole sentence on one row has to shrink it hard: on our six word sample, Highlighted Word and Clean Motion drew the line at half the size Captik Glow did. Captik Glow, Illusion, Blockbuster and Scribble kept it largest.

  • Use Manglish where the feed is mixed

If many of your viewers speak Malayalam but grew up outside Kerala, Roman captions reach them. Every template looks as designed in Roman letters, including the handwritten ones.

  • Check chillu letters in proper names

Malayalam has special final consonant forms, the chillu letters. If a name you say often comes out with the wrong ending, fix it once and Captik keeps the correction on that device.

Templates that hold Malayalam

We drew this page’s sample line through the real caption engine in each template and kept the ones where nothing was cut and the words stayed a readable size. Handwritten and serif templates are built around Latin letters, so they look most like themselves in Roman captions.

In Malayalam script

  • Captik Glow

The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.

  • Illusion

A big word between two small lines, with a glitch as it lands.

  • Blockbuster

A red condensed capitals run, then the rest of the line in a white script.

  • Scribble

Marker handwriting with a yellow highlight on the spoken word.

In Roman letters

  • Journal

Handwriting that arrives word by word, blurring into focus.

  • Interlock

The emphasised word becomes a large italic serif, with the line fitted around it.

  • Aura

An editorial lockup: a large feature word, an italic serif and small words around it.

  • Captik Glow

The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.

How to caption a Malayalam video

  1. Step 1

    Upload and choose Malayalam

Any common video format and any size. Captik times each word to your voice, usually in under a minute.

  2. Step 2

    Choose how to write it

Native Script gives you Malayalam script. Romanised (Latin) spells it in Roman letters, and English Translation translates each sentence.

  3. Step 3

    Fix, place and export

Correct any word, pick a template, turn on Safe area and drag the caption clear of what the app covers, then export. The render happens on our servers, so it works from a phone.

Cutting in Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve? The plugin lists Malayalam and puts the captions on your timeline. Check where the caption sits with the safe zone checker.

Malayalam captions, answered

Can I caption in Manglish, Malayalam in Roman letters?

Yes. Choose Malayalam as the spoken language and Romanised (Latin) as the writing system. Malayalam words are spelled in Roman letters and the English words you say stay in English.

Malayalam words are long. Will the captions fit?

Captik fits each caption line to the caption box and shrinks a line that would otherwise overflow. You can also drag the box wider or narrower, and split a long line into two in the editor. The templates listed on this page are the ones that held our sample line without clipping and kept it a readable size.

Can I export Malayalam captions from my phone?

Yes. Malayalam captions render on Captik’s servers, which load Noto Sans Malayalam, so the file comes out the same from a phone or a computer.

Does Malayalam work in the Premiere Pro, After Effects and Resolve plugin?

Yes. Malayalam is on the plugin panel’s language list, with native, Roman and English options.
