How Gurmukhi looks on screen
Punjabi in India is written in Gurmukhi. Like Devanagari, its letters hang from a headline, but the letter shapes and vowel signs are its own, so a Hindi font cannot draw them. The small addak mark (ੱ) doubles the next consonant, and it is easy to lose at caption size on a thin font.
In the width table Captik fits every line with, measured in Chrome on the caption fonts, one Punjabi letter takes 0.80 em against 0.59 em for a Latin one. The sample line on this page comes out at 0.88 of the width as the same line in Roman letters.
Noto Sans Gurmukhi is the default. The Text tab also lists 9: Google Sans, Baloo Paaji 2, Langar, BhuTuka Expanded One, Braah One, Mukta Mahee, Anek Gurmukhi, Noto Serif Gurmukhi, Tiro Gurmukhi.
Three ways to write it
ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਸੈਰ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ
Gurmukhi. English words you say are written in Gurmukhi too, so the caption reads in one script.
Ajj asin pind di sair karange
Punjabi in Roman letters, the way many fans type it, with English words kept in English.
Today we’ll walk around the village
An English translation of each sentence, timed to your speech.
Worth knowing for Punjabi
Reach viewers abroad with Roman letters
Plenty of Punjabi speakers abroad do not read Gurmukhi. Roman captions, or a second export with the English translation, let the same video work for them.
Check the addak on heavy templates
A heavy outline can fill in the small marks above a letter. If ਅੱਜ reads like ਅਜ, pick a template without a thick stroke or raise the size.
Templates that hold Punjabi
We drew this page’s sample line through the real caption engine in each template and kept the ones where nothing was cut and the words stayed a readable size. Handwritten and serif templates are built around Latin letters, so they look most like themselves in Roman captions.
- Captik Glow
The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.
- Deep Glow
Heavy capitals with a magenta neon glow.
- Highlighted Word
A plain white line with the spoken word picked out in a warm colour.
- Captik Word
One clean row that builds as you speak, the current word brightest.
- Tabahi
Heavy capitals with a thick outline, for loud punchy lines.
- Blockbuster
A red condensed capitals run, then the rest of the line in a white script.
- Aura
An editorial lockup: a large feature word, an italic serif and small words around it.
- Journal
Handwriting that arrives word by word, blurring into focus.
