How Kannada script looks on screen

Kannada letters are rounded, and many carry a small hooked stroke on top. When consonants join, the second one is written smaller underneath the first, so a line of Kannada stands taller than a line of English at the same size. Two caption rows set close together can touch where the same rows in Hindi would not.

In the width table Captik fits every line with, measured in Chrome on the caption fonts, one Kannada letter takes 0.89 em against 0.59 em for a Latin one. The sample line on this page comes out 1.17 times as wide as the same line in Roman letters.

Fonts that really draw it

Noto Sans Kannada is the default. The Text tab also lists 10: Google Sans, Baloo Tamma 2, Akaya Kanadaka, Padyakke Expanded One, Anek Kannada, Hind Mysuru, Hubballi, Noto Serif Kannada, Tiro Kannada, Benne.

Three ways to write it

  • Native Script

    ಇವತ್ತು ನಾವು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಸುತ್ತೋಣ

Kannada script. English words you say are written in Kannada script too, so the whole caption is in one script.

  • Romanised (Latin)

    Ivattu naavu Bengaluru suttona

Kannada in Roman letters, the way it is often typed in chats, with English words left in English.

  • English Translation

    Let’s explore Bengaluru today

An English translation, timed sentence by sentence, for viewers outside Karnataka.

Worth knowing for Kannada

  • Prefer one row over two

Subscript consonants hang below the line. A single row never collides with itself, so if two row captions start touching, switch the caption lines to one and let the words change faster.

  • Long words are normal, plan for them

Kannada joins suffixes onto the word, so a single word can fill a row. Captik shrinks a row that would overflow, and you can split a long line into two in the editor if the shrink goes too far.

Templates that hold Kannada

We drew this page’s sample line through the real caption engine in each template and kept the ones where nothing was cut and the words stayed a readable size. Handwritten and serif templates are built around Latin letters, so they look most like themselves in Roman captions.

In Kannada script

  • Clean Motion

A quiet single line in which each word arrives as it is spoken.

  • Captik Word

One clean row that builds as you speak, the current word brightest.

  • Highlighted Word

A plain white line with the spoken word picked out in a warm colour.

  • Captik Glow

The key word lands in large glowing capitals under a small line of context.

In Roman letters

  • Blockbuster

A red condensed capitals run, then the rest of the line in a white script.

  • Aura

An editorial lockup: a large feature word, an italic serif and small words around it.

  • Journal

Handwriting that arrives word by word, blurring into focus.

  • Tabahi

Heavy capitals with a thick outline, for loud punchy lines.

How to caption a Kannada video

  1. Step 1

    Upload and choose Kannada

Any common video format and any size. Captik times each word to your voice, usually in under a minute.

  2. Step 2

    Choose how to write it

Native Script gives you Kannada script. Romanised (Latin) spells it in Roman letters, and English Translation translates each sentence.

  3. Step 3

    Fix, place and export

Correct any word, pick a template, turn on Safe area and drag the caption clear of what the app covers, then export. The render happens on our servers, so it works from a phone.

Kannada captions, answered

Kannada words can be long. Will they fit on screen?

Captik fits each caption line to the caption box and shrinks a line that would otherwise overflow. You can also drag the box wider or narrower, and split a long line into two in the editor.

Are English words written in Kannada script?

With Native Script selected, yes, so the caption stays in one script. Choose Romanised (Latin) if you want English words in English letters.

Can I export Kannada captions from my phone?

Yes. Kannada captions render on Captik’s servers, which load Noto Sans Kannada, so subscript letters come out the same from a phone or a computer.

Does Kannada work in the Premiere Pro, After Effects and Resolve plugin?

Yes. Kannada is on the plugin panel’s language list, with native, Roman and English options.
